Western Region 2014 Round Up

The 2014 competition season as usual started off with the Saoirse Saddlery Dressage League hosted by Dalysgrove RC in Creagh Equestrian Centre.

Proceeds from the Final were in aid of Aware and a cheque for €750 was presented to Tanya and Cecil Jacob on behalf of the participating clubs.

The Western Region had 4 nominees for the Lancelot Awards, which were presented folowing Annual General Meeting of the Association of Irish Riding Clubs on Saturday 15th February 2014 at Racket Hall Country House, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary.

Tynagh RC were nominated for Club of the Year, Thomas Daniels of Tynagh RC was nominated for Club Member of the Year, Christine McWillams of Corrib RC was nominated for Secretary of the Year & Paul Hughes of Tonabrockey RC was nominated for Person of the Year.

Round Tower RC held two very successful Training Shows in River View Stables, Crossmolina, Co. Mayo. These gave riders the oppertunity to jump their show-jumping course under the watchful eye of a Padraic Corcoran & get expert advice on how to improve their rounds. Riders were also giver the chance to ride a Dressage test and get personal feedback from the judge with the opportunity to re-ride lowest scoring movements to improve dressage score.

In March & April we had the West Clubs Derby & Dressage League, where the clubs in the region all came together to host 3 shows. This League was sponsored by Berney Saddley with beautiful prizes on offer for the winners in the final.

The AIRC National Hunter Trials took place on Sunday April 6th at Flowerhill and as usual the Western Region was very well represented and successful across all grades.
In the Advanced Primary Pairs Dalysgrove duo Donna Murray on Kiko Temple & John Miland on Huntingfield Holly claimed 2nd spot.
In the Advanced Primary Championship Liz Potter & Clyde were 4th for Donegal Gaeltacht, Benbulbens Louise Hamilton  & Samara Star were 5th while Liam Stapleton of Tynagh was 6th on Lady Tessa.
In the Intermediate Pairs Anne Chambers on Kiltown Miss Molly & Keary Smith on Arther took top spot for Letterkenny, Tir Conaill’s Lorraine Gillespie on Diamond Lillie were 2nd paired with Lisa Kennedy of Killossery on Holly Park Gold, while Benbulben took the next 2 placings with Joanna Kearns on West Coast Dreamer & Katy Mc Aleenan on Larkhill Rose in 3rd place and mother & daughter duo Anna Burke on Rookery Blue & Avril Burke on Rookery Apache in 4th, another Letterkenny pair Damien Gallagher on Drumnacart Lass & Francis Mc Nicholl on Trial and Error came 5th.
In the Intermediate Championship Tynagh’s Aisling Daniels on Brogue Shelly finished 2nd while Corribs Bernadette Flaherty was 6th with Cheeky La Belle.
In the Mixed Pairs class the Donegal Gaeltacht pairing of John Mc Daid on Sionnach and Laura Schneider on Chloe Lass came 4th.
Gerry Kyne of Corrib took 2nd place in the Advanced Intermediate Championship on The Real Droopys, while in the Open Championship Benbulbens Brendan Dolan on Action Man II took the honours and Laura Schneider on Chloe Lass claimed the Advanced Open Championship for Donegal Gaeltacht.

On Sunday April 27th Letterkenny RC hosted the North West Team Show Jumpng & Dressage Challenge. As usual this proved to be a very popular event and Donegal Gaeltacht riders were really on form claiming the honours in both sections.

On Sunday May 25th Benbulben RC hosted the Western Regional Quaifier for the A.I.R.C Team Show Jumping Championship. Twenty teams took part on the day in what proved to be a nail biting competition.

Tynagh RC finished in 4th place which secured them a place at the Wild Card Qualifier in Stradbally, unfortunately they didn’t manage to secure a place in the RDS at this.

The Arden Equestrian Show Jumping League took place in May & June with 3 legs hosted by South Roscommon RC, Bridge RC & Dalysgrove RC. As usual this league proved very popular with some fantastic prizes on offer for the overall winners.

The Annual Riding Clubs Festival was held at Stradbally Hall Estate, Co. Laois on June 7th & 8th. A large volume of competitiors from the Western Region travelled to the festival with great success.

In the Irish Field Dressage arenas Donna Murray of Dalysgrove RC got the weekend off o a great start by winning Section 1 of the Advanced Primary Dressage on Lady Temple with a fantastic score of 79.21%, Donna also finished 5th in Section 3 riding Kiko Temple and was 4th in the Advanced Primary Final with Kiko Temple.
In the TRI Equestrian Show Jumping arenas a mixed team from the Western Region comprising of Darragh Ruane on The Guns of Dunree from Benbulben RC, Caroline Rushe on Galli from Dalysgrove RC, Lawrence Smyth on Jennys Jigsaw from Donegal Gaeltacht & Cathriona Goaley on Curra Whoopi from Springmount RC took second place.
In the Horseware Wildcard Team Show Jumping Championship Tynagh RC finished in 6th place with Aisling Daniels on Glen Ledgend, Raymond Daniels on Barnaboy Colin, Margaret Hynes on Barnaboy Colourcoded & Thomas Daniels on Barnaboy Jackeen.
In the Intermediate Individual Show Jumping Gavin Keenan on Ardgaineen Waltzer from Benbulben RC was 2nd, while Avril Burke on Rookery Apache, also from Benbulben RC was 3rd.
In the Advanced Intermediate Individual Show Jumping Donegal Gaeltacht took both 1st & 2nd with Emily Schneider on Raylady taking top spot and Patricia Warren on Hes a Dandy coming 2nd. Patricia also claimed 1st place in the Advanced Intermediate Power & Speed class with Hes a Dandy.
In the Open Power & Speed class another Donegal Gaeltacht rider was in the ribbons with Sally Mahon on Graf Landlord coming 6th, while in the Advanced Open Individual class Laura Schneider & Chloe Lass took 3rd spot for Donegal Gaeltacht.
In the final Show Jumping class on Saturday, the Vetern Riders Show Jumping Anna Burke from Benbulben RC finished 5th with Rookery Sparkle.
In the Horse Sport Ireand Showing rings Aisling Hughes from South Roscommon was 3rd in the Lightweight Hnter class with Full Set Fred.
In the Lightweight Cob class Catherine O’Sullivan on Paintwork Lad top the top spot, with Niamh Ruane & Dusky Moon from Round Tower RC in 4th and Shauna Freeney on Nic Nac from Springmount RC in 6th. Catherine also took the top spot in the Maxi Cobs class with Blue Jeans with whom she also won Reserve Champion Cob.
In the Riding Horse up to 158cm class Emma Lawrence & Benny Ace from Benbulben RC finished 6th.
In the Coloured Horse up to 158cm Catherine O’Sullivan & Paintwork Lad were again in the ribbons taking 2nd prize, while Shauna Freeney & Nic Nac were 6th.
In the Coloured Horse over 158cm class Serena Finnerty & Fountain Sissco of Corrib RC were 6th.
Catherine O’Sullivan & Paintwork Lad took the Reserve Champion Coloured Horse Title.
In the Intermediate Performance Hunter Class Christine McWilliams on Guinness Mc from Corrib RC were 3rd and Rachel Burke on Rookery Blue from Benbulben RC were 5th.

On Sunday the success continued for competitiors from the Western Region, in the Team Show Jumping Challenge Donegal Gaeltacht’s 3 rider team of Laura Schneider on Chloe Lass, Emily Schneider on Raylady & Patricia Warren on Hes a Dandy finished 2nd while Benbulbens team of Gwen McDermott on Carlton Spice, Fiona Tansey on Cloon Silver Cloud, Breda Perrin on Erronagh Sky & Julie Magennis on Grey News were 4th.
In the Intermediate Team Show Jumping Benbulben RC took the top spot with a team comprising of Edwina Ruane on Kilathurley Elvis, Avril Burke on Rookery Apache, Rachel Burke on Rookery Blue & Anna Burke on Rookery Sparkle.
In the Advanced Primary Individual Show Jumping Cathriona Goaley & Curra Whoopi claimed first place for Springmount RC.
In the Intermediate Power & Speed Avril Burke on Rookery Apache from Benbulben RC was 6th, Anna Burke, also from Benbulben RC on Rookery Sparkle was 7th & Colm Kelly on Monard Rose of Castlerea from Corrib RC was 8th.

Back in the Showing rings Geraldine Donoghue of Castle Carraig was 2nd the Primary Showing class with Lucky Cosmo and Rachel Lee of Corrib was 3rd with Prince Owen.
In the Connemara Performance class Therese Anderson of Benbulben came 2nd with Kilian Boy and Cathriona Goaley of Springmount was 3rd with Curra Whoopi.
In the Irish Draught Performance class Martin Shaughnessy on Putchacauns Mr Rose of Corrib RC came 5th.
In the Ex-Racehorse performance class Darragh Ruane of Benbulben RC came 3rd riding The Guns of Dunree.
Rachel Burke of Benbulben RC was 5th in the Intermediate Working Hunter class riding Rookery Blue, Katie Winspear of West Coast RC was 5th on Maraghmore Sam & 6th on Woodland Morning in the 4 & 5 year old Working Hunter while Donegal Gaeltachts Laura Schneider took 1st place in the Advanced Intermediate & above Working Hunter with Chloe Lass. Laura also won Reserve Champion Working Hunter with Chloe Lass.

 

The National Show Jumping Championships were held in Mullingar Equestrian Centre on Sunday July 13th and competitors from the Western Region were very successful taking home prizes in all grades.

In the Primary Championship Qualifier  Corrib’s Monica Nielsen on Heather Dew were 2nd and South Roscommon’s Assumpta Shannon on Dandys Boy were 6th and Monica & Heather Dew claimed the Primary Championship Title for Corrib.

In the Advanced Primary Championship Qualifier Liam Stapleton took the honours for Tynagh riding Lady Tessa, while Emma Glynn on Signal Fire were 2nd for South Roscommon and Rose Burke on Darragh Dale from Dalysgrove were 6th.

In the Advanced Primary Championship Final Donegal Gaeltachts Lawrence Smyth on Jennys Jigsaw claimed another Championship Title for the West while Dermot Goode of Dalysgrove on Elvis Flaming Star came 5th.

In the Intermediate Championship Qualifier Benbulben RC riders featured strongly with Gavin Keenan & Ardgaineen Waltzer in 2nd, Edwina Ruane & Tullavilla Stuart in 4th and Rebekah Tansey & Brighten Up Your Day in 5th.

In the Intermediate Championship Final the Western Region secured 4 of the 6 placings Benbulben’s Rebekah Tansey on Brighten Up Your Day took the Championship Title, with Rudy Schneider of Donegal Gaeltacht on My Boy Boysie in 2nd, Mary McMahon & Aylroe Boy of Benbulben in 3rd & Edwina Ruane of Benbulben RC in 6th with Tullavilla Too.

In the Advanced Intermediate Championship Qualifier Donegal Gaeltacht riders took 2 ribbons with Emily Schneider & Raylady 4th and Patricia Warren with Hes A Dandy 5th.
Emily Schneider on Raylady were also 6th in the Advanced Intermediate Championship Final.

In the Open Championship Qualifier Benbulben twins Deirdre Dolan & Vanessa McDonald were both in the ribbons with Deirdre & Nisqually De May taking 2nd place and Vanessa in 5th with Vanessas Pride.
Deirdre Dolan on Nisqually De May also placed 3rd in the Open Championship Final.

In the Advanced Open Championship Donegal Gaeltacht’s Laura Schneider & Chloe Lass were in top form taking the honours in both the Advanced Open Championship Qualifier and the Advanced Open Championship Final.

In the Advanced Primary Accumulator riders from the Western Region again featured in the ribbons with Lawrence Smyth on Jennys Jigsaw from Donegal Gaeltacht in 2nd, Karen Mc Crann on Kalua of Benbulben in 4th, Tynagh’s Liam Stapleton & Lady Tessa in 5th and Darragh Ruane of Benbulben in 6th with The Guns of Dunree.

In the Intermediate Derby Benbulben sisters Avril & Rachel Burke took the top 2 spots, with Avril riding Rookery Apache in 1st & Rachel on Rookery Blue in 2nd, while Niall Coghill of Bridge riding Captain Paddy came 6th.

In the Advanced Intermediate Derby Tara Fergus Sheridan riding Tirconaill River Rose claimed 3rd place for Benbulben.

Benbulben riders again featured in the ribbons in the Open Derby with Kelly Fergus on Art Monarch in 2nd & Deirdre Dolan on Nisqually De May in 3rd.

Donegal Gaeltacht’s Laura Schneider riding Chloe Lass added to her collection of red ribbons by winning the Advanced Open Derby.

 

On Sunday August 10th a team from Benbulben RC consisting of Gavin Keenan on Ardgaineen Waltzer, Rachel Burke on Rookery Blue, Louise O’Hara on Seamus of Annaghmore, Vanessa McDonald on Vanessas Pride & their Chef d’Equipe Mary Lang reresented the Western Region at the AIRC Team Show Jumping Championships in the RDS. The team finished 3rd overall and won Best Turned Out Team.

The National Dressage Championships were held in Mullingar Equestrian Centre on Sunday August 17th and the Western Region was very well represented with competitors taking part in all grades of competition from Primary up to Advanced Open.

In the Primary Championship Marlena Klonowsca from West Coast RC riding Tailors Magical Tale was placed 5th.

In the Advanced Primary Championship Dalysgrove RC’s Donna Murray on  Kiko Temple rode two superb tests to claim the Advanced Primary Championship Title for the West.

In the Advanced Open Invitational Championship Dalysgrove RC were again in the ribbons with Elaine Murphy on Eurisco riding two lovely tests to finish 2nd, while Patricia Warren of Donegal Gaeltacht finished 5th with Burinex.

In the non championship classes Niamh Macken of Ballinasloe RC put in a fantastic performance in the Intermediate class on Captain Smirnoff to finish 3rd, this result was all the more remarkable as this was their return to competition after an injury forced them to have a several month break.

In the Team Championship the Dalysgrove RC team of Elaine Murphy on Nino Manoso, Kevin Clogher on Sin E Sham, Donna Murray on Kiko Temple & Christine Rohan on Sweet Callows Gale finished in 5th place.

On Sunday September 14th several horses & riders from the Region travelled to Mullingar Equestrian Centre for the Equest Pramox and Hit-Air sponsored Masters Series final.

In the Intermediate Welcome Stakes, Benbulben RC dominated the class with Avril Burke on Rookery Apache taking 1st place, Gavin Keenan on Ardgaineen Waltzer in 2nd & Rachel Burke on Rookery Blue in 3rd while Caoilinn DeBairead of Corrib RC was 6th with Cavalier Kim. Cormac Mc Cormack of Leterkenny RC was 6th in the Advanced Intermediate Welcome Stakes on board Lenamore Santa Fea, while in the Open & Advanced Open Welcome Stakes Lizzie Naughton from Round Tower RC was 4th with Currower Girl.

In the Intermediate Table C Speed the Burke sisters from Benbulben RC were again in the ribbons, Rachel was 2nd on board Rookery Blue while Avril was 3rd on Rookery Apache. In the Advanced Intermediate Table C Speed Patricia Warren & Hes A Dandy from Donegal Gaeltacht RC finished 6th and in the Open & Advanced Open Table C Speed the McDonald sisters from Benbulben RC took yet more ribbons back to the west, Vanessa took 1st place on Vanessas Pride while Deirdre was 3rd on Nisqually De May.

In the Intermediate Grand Prix Avril Burke of  Benbulben RC put in a foot perfect round with Rookery Apache to win the class while club mate Gavin Keenan on Ardgaineen Waltzer finished 3rd. Unfortunately none of the riders from the region made it into the ribbons in the Advanced Intermediate Grand Prix, but in the Open & Advanced Open Grand Prix the McDonald sisters both collected ribbons for Benbulben RC, Deirdre was 2nd with Nisqually De May and Vanessa was 6th with Vanessas Pride.

Avril Burkes win in the Intermediate Grand Prix seen her secure her place at the top of the Intermediate Leading Rider leader board with a total of 69 points, Rachel Burke & Rachel Lawson of Clonshire RC both finished on 56 points, but as Lawson finished higher in the Grand Prix she took 2nd place & Rachel Burke was 3rd while Gavin Keenan was 5th with 45 points. In the Open & Advanced Open Leading Rider both the McDonald sisters finished on 23 points, but as Deirdre placed higher in the Grand Prix she took 4th spot while Vanessa was 5th.

Avril Burke was also the overall leading rider on the day which seen her win a Hit-Air safety vest worth approximately €450.

October & November seen a number of Leagues take place across the region, Dalysgrove RC hosted a Friday night Show Jumping League in Creagh Equestrian Centre, with the Final taking place on Halloween night, Friday October 31st so to add to the fun of the show they also held a fancy dress competition on the night which was sponsored by Dalysgrove club member John Miland of Milands Garden Centre And Florist.

Sunday November 23rd seen the finals of the West Clubs Autumn Show Jumping & Dressage League held in Claremorris Equestrian Centre, hosted by West Coast RC. The Show Jumping League was kindly sponsored by Redmills & there was some great competition on the day for the fabulous prizes on offer. Competition in the Intermediate class was particularly fierce, with the last rider in the class John McArdle of Tynagh RC on Glen Legend just pipping Dalysgrove’s John Miland at the post to take the honours.

2013 Dinner Dance & Awards

The AIRC Western Region Dinner Dance & Awards took place on Saturday 25th January in the lovely Athlone Springs Hotel. A beautiful meal was enjoyed by all who attended and the dancing lasted well into the early hours of Sunday morning. The awards were presented to the leading rider in each grade across all thee disciplines and to the overall Member of The Year and Club of The Year.

First up was Dressage and Primary was won by Kathleen Duggan of Springmount, 2nd was John Kelehan of Corrib, 3rd was Christine Rohan of Dalysgrove, Geraldine Donohue from Castle Carraig was 4th, Evelyn Coyne of West Coast was 5th & 6th was Assumpta Shannon of South Roscommon. In Advanced Primary Benbulbens Melinda Morgan took the top spot, Fiona Fenton of South Roscommon was 2nd, Caroline Rushe of Dalysgrove and Finola Murphy of Benbulben were joint 3rd, Donna Murray of Dalysgrove came 5th and 6th place went to Christine McWilliams of Corrib. In Intermediate section Clair Lenehan of Tonabrockey was 1st, Kevin Clogher of Dalysgrove was 2nd, in joint 3rd were John McArdle of Tynagh & Niamh Macken of Ballinasloe, 5th was Fiona Monne of Springmount & in 6th place was Anne Granahan of Benbulben. Grainné Kelly of Springmount was the winner of the Advanced Intermediate, with Jean O’Connor of Corrib in 2nd, Marjorie Hardiman of Tonabrockey came 3rd, Tracy Murphy of Dalysgrove came 4th while her clubmate Georgie Spain was 5th & Nadine Gallagher of Letterkenny came 6th. Tonabrockey also won the Open section with Mary Mitchell taking top spot, Patricia Warren of Donegal Gaeltacht was 2nd, Danielle Touhy of Dalysgrove was 3rd, 4th was Sylvia Baumberger of Ballinasloe, while joint 5th went to Damien Carey of South Roscommon and Laura Schneider of Donegal Gaeltacht. Elaine Murphy of Dalysgrove took the honours in the Advanced Open, being the only rider in the region currently competing at this grade.

The Overall Member of the Year Title was shared by John Miland of Dalysgrove, John McArdle of Tyngh & Norman Tierney of Springmount.

The Club of the Year was won by Benbulben RC with Corrib RC 2nd & Dalysgrove RC 3rd.

This year we had chosen the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind Assistance Dogs Programme as our chosen charity & we were honoured to have Assistance Dog Kieffer in attendance on the night so we could see one of these amazing dogs in action. The total raised on the night was €680.80.

Western Region 2013 Round Up

2013 was another successful year in the Western Region with plenty of competitions across all disciplines and the region was well represented at all the National Events.

The year started off with the Dalysgrove RC Saoirse Saddlery Dressage League which ran in January & February and was well attended across all grades with competitors from many of the clubs in the Region taking part.

Next up was the Galway Clubs Derby League in February & March, which was jointly hosted by Castle Carraig RC, Corrib RC, Springmount RC & Tonabrockey RC, this proved very successful and was a great introduction for young/green horses to Cross Country style fences before the Cross Country Season started. There was a great turnout across all grades with members from many of the clubs in the region competing.

The Donegal Clubs also ran a very successful North West Spring League in February and March with classes to suit everybody from X-Poles for beginners up to 1m20 for Advanced Open riders. Each class had a Graded & Training Section so riders could compete out of grade for a change.

On 14th April The National Hunter Trials Championships were held at Gurteen Agricultural College, Co. Tipperary this was the first of the National Events of the year and the Western Region was well represented. This was a very successful event for Western Region members with Dalysgrove’s Caroline Rushe and Galli scooping the Advanced Primary Championship bang on the optimum time of 6.48 the only rider across all grades on the day to finish in exactly the optimum time. Other Western Region members who were successful in the Advanced Primary championship were Pat Touhy also from Dalysgrove who finished 3rd, Fiona Fenton from Bridge who came 4th and Dalysgrove Dermot Goode who was 6th. In the Advance Primary Pairs Springmount duo Caroline Clancy & Cathriona Goaley finished 3rd while Dalysgrove’s Caroline Rushe & Pat Touhy secured yet more ribbons by coming 5th. In the Intermediate Championship Niall Coghill from Bridge finished 5th while Springmount’s Marita Shannon was 6th. In the Intermediate Pairs Springmount’s Adair Leech & Jenny Jakeman scooped 2nd spot, Seanna Kane from Benbulben & Niall Coghill from Bridge were 3rd while Benbulben’s Sharon McGowan & Elaine Wilson were 4th. In the Advanced Intermediate Championship John Mc Daid from Donegal Gaeltacht finished 6th. In the Open Championship Donegal Gaeltacht’s Sally Mahon finished 5th. In the Advanced Open championship Donegal Gaeltacht’s Laura Schneider came 2nd, while in the  Mixed Pairs Donegal Gaeltacht’s Laura Schneider & Sally Mahon took 6th spot.

April also seen Castle Carrig RC hold a successful Dressage & Show Jumping Show in Duffys of Claregalway, Letterkenny RC hosted the North West Team Dressage & Show Jumping Challenge in Eglinton Equestrian Centre and the hugely successful the Arden Equestrian Show Jumping League got underway with the first leg been hosted by Ballinasloe RC.

On May 5th Benbulben RC hosted the Western Regional Qualifier for the Masters Series Show Jumping in Tubberbride Stables which was another well attended event, with Show Jumping classes for Primary & Advanced Primary riders in addition to the Masters Qualifiers for riders graded Intermediate & above, there were also Derby style novelty classes & Dressage for all grades so everybody was catered for. May also seen the Arden Equestrian Show Jumping League get into full swing with Bridge RC & Dalysgrove RC each hosting a leg, Dalysgrove also hosted the Regional Dressage Qualifiers at their show in Creagh and of course the hugely popular Western Regional Qualifier for The Horseware Ireland AIRC Team Show Jumping Championship was held by Benbulben RC on May 26th. This was a hotly contested event with 24 teams representing 13 clubs in the region taking part and it went down to the wire in a nail-biting jump-off before the home side emerged victorious and Benbulben’s 2nd Team of Anna Burke, Edwina Ruane, Kean O’Hara & Vanessa McDonald went on to represent the Western Region at the RDS in August. Donegal Gaeltacht’s Team 2 came 2nd earning them a spot in the Wildcard Qualifier at the Riding Club Festival in Stradbally on June 9th while newly reformed West Coast RC were 3rd. The Best Turned Out team on the day were Round Tower RC.

June proved to be a very busy month with Donegal Gaeltacht’s hugely popular Beach Show on the Bank Holiday weekend kick starting the month’s events with both Dressage & Show Jumping classes.  Next up was the biggest event in the Riding Club Calender, the Riding Clubs Festival in Stradbally on June 8th & 9th, followed by the Final of the Arden Equestrian Show Jumping League on June 16th. June 16th also seen recently formed Inishowen RC host their first Dressage & Show Jumping Show, while on June 30th Letterkenny hosted a Dressage & Derby Show with a lovely Derby track on grass.

The 8th & 9th June seen the Annual Riding Clubs Festival take place at Stradbally Hall Estate, Co. Laois, this is the highlight of the Riding Club calendar for many people and was a very successful event for members of the various clubs in the region. Ballinasloe’s Niamh Macken excelled in the Dressage Arena as usual and finished 3rd in the Intermediate Dressage Qualifier & 2nd in the Final, and also took 2nd prize in the Intermediate Prix Caprilli Dressage and 1st in the Intermediate Long Arena Dressage. Tonabrockey’s Maria Griffin was 6th in the Intermediate Dressage Qualifier. In the Advanced Primary Prix Caprilli Dressage Ruth Mc Crossan from Donegal Gaeltacht was 4th while fellow Donegal Gaeltacht club member Patricia Warren took 4th place in the Dressage to Music (AI/O/AO). In the Fancy Dress Pairs Dressage Benbulben’s mother & daughter duo Anna & Rachel Burke took 2nd spot, while Katie Winspear & Ximena Lister from Daysgrove were 4th.  In the Advanced Primary Team Show Jumping a mixed team of Caroline Rushe from Dalysgrove together with Daniel Walsh, Lawrence Smyth & Rudy Schneider of Donegal Gaeltacht scooped 2nd place. Benbulbens team of John & Gwen Mc Dermott and Kean & Louise O’Hara came 6th in the Team Show Jumping Challenge and Benbulben also claimed 2nd spot in the Intermediate Team Show Jumping with a team of Anna & Rachel Burke, Gavin Keenan & Edwina Ruane. Corrib’s Caoilinn de Bairead took 2nd prize in the Advanced Primary Show Jumping, while Aoife Hegarty from Castle Carraig was 9th. In the Intermediate Show Jumping Anna Burke from Benbulben was 2nd, while daughter Avril came 4th. Avril also took 1st place in the Intermediate Power & Speed Show Jumping while fellow Benbulben club members Joanna Kerins & Edwina Ruane finished in 2nd & 7th respectively. In Advanced Intermediate Show Jumping Benbulben’s John McDermott was 2nd, Patricia Warren of Donegal Gaeltacht was 4th, while Kean O’Hara from Benbulben was 5th. Kean also picked up 2nd place in the Advanced Intermediate Power & Speed Show Jumping while in the Advanced Intermediate Accummulator Show Jumping Patricia Warren took another 4th. In the Advanced Open Show Jumping Laura Schneider from Donegal Gaeltacht finished 2nd.In the Showing Ring Letterkenny RC’s Libby Carton finished 6th in the Mediumweight Hunter class, Catherine O’ Sullivan from Castle Carraig was 4th in the Maxi Cobs class and also 4th in the Coloured Horse Up to 158cms class. Benbulbens Anne Grannahan picked up 3rd in the Coloured Horse Over 158cms class. In the Advanced Primary Performance Hunter Cathriona Goaley from Springmount was 5th while Donegal Gaeltacht’s Rudy Schneider was 6th. Therese Anderson from Benbulben was 6th in the Intermediate Performance Hunter. Laura Mc Loughlin from Round Tower took 6th spot in the Ex Racehorse class, Jo Corkery from Ballinasloe RC was 6th in the Irish Draught class, Springmount’s Orla O’ Connell ws 4th in the Novice Showing, Donegal Gaeltacht’s Daniel Walsh ws 3rd in the Introduction to Showing. In the Connemara Performance Finola Murphy of Benbulben was 6th, while Benbulben’s Avril Burke took 6th in the Intermediate Working Hunter & Laura Schneider of  Donegal Gaeltacht was 6th in the AI/O/AO Working Hunter.

July was a relatively quiet month with just a trainig day in Cloncaw Equestrian Centre, Glaslough on the 28th and the National Show Jumping Championships taking place on July 14th in Mullingar Equestrian Centre, Co. Westmeath. Elaine Murphy from Dalysgrove won both the Advanced Open Championship Qualifier & the Advanced Open Championship Final with Eurisco. In the Open Championship Qualifier Benbulben’s Vanessa McDonald took top spot on Vanessas Pride while club mate Kelly Fergus came 5th. Benbulben riders Deirdre McDonald, Vanessa McDonald & Kelly Fergus finished 3rd, 4th & 5th in the Open Championship Final. In the Advanced Intermediate Championship Qualifier John Mc Dermott of Benbulben was 2nd while Patricia Warren of Donegal Gaeltacht won the Advanced Intermediate Championship Final with He’s A Dandy. Gavin Keenan of Benbulben won the Intermediate Championship Qualifier on Ardgaineen Waltzer with Glynis Morgan also from Benbulben finishing 5th, Glynis also took 6th place in the Intermediate Championship Final while fellow club member Anna Burke came 4th. In the Advanced Primary Championship Qualifier Lawrence Smyth from Donegal Gaeltacht was 3rd while Benbulbens Sandra Stuart was 5th & Caroline Clancy from Springmount 6th. Lawrence also finished 3rd in the Advanced Primary Championship Final while Ballinasloe’s Paula Fox was 5th & Corrib’s Caoilinn De Bairead 6th. In the Primary Championship South Roscommon won both the Qualifier & the Final with Fiona Fenton taking top spot in the Qualifier on board Dandys Boy while Assumpta Shannon won the Final on CE Captain Flash. Assumpta also finished 3rd in the qualifier, while Ballinasloe’s Niamh Macken was 4th & Benbulben’s Miriam Mangan was 5th. It was a 1,2,3 for the west in the Primary Championship with Monica Nielsen from Corrib in 2nd & Niamh Macken in 3rd. In the Derby classes Kelly Fergus of Benbulben finished 4th in the Open Derby, John Mc Dermott also from Benbulben was 6th in the Advanced Intermediate Derby and in the Intermediate Derby Benbulben’s Avril Burke was 2nd & Breda Perrin was 4th while Corrib’s Bernadette Flaherty was 6th.  In the Advanced Primary Accumulator all but one of the ribbons went to the Western Region, Lawrence Smyth of Donegal Gaeltacht took top spot with Jennys Jigsaw, Cathriona Goaley of Springmount was 2nd, Corrib’s Caoilinn De Bairead & Christine Mc Williams were 3rd & 4th and Paula Fox from Ballinasloe RC was 6th, while in the Primary Accumulater Miriam Mangan was 2nd for Benbulben & Niamh Macken finished 3rd for Ballinasloe.

August seen attentions turn to the RDS and Benbulben RC were representing the Region in The Horseware Ireland Association of Irish Riding Clubs Team Show Jumping Championship, unfortunately luck wasn’t on Benbulbens side on the day, but they finished a very creditable 4th. On August 18th The National Dressage Championships were held in Mullingar Equestrian Centre, Co. Westmeath. Elaine Murphy of Dalysgrove was 5th Advanced Open Invitational Championship, Patricia Warren from Donegal Gaeltacht finished 6th in the Open Championship, Lorraine Costello of Dalysgrove was 3rd in the Advanced Intermediate and Donna Murray of Dalysgrove was 6th in the Advanced Primary Championship. Dalysgrove RC hosted a very enjoyable Cross Jump & Dressage competition on August 25th which was the perfect opportunity for those going to the National Horse Trials Championships to brush up on their 3 disciplines & get in some last minute practise.

On September 01st The National Horse Trials Championships were held in Lisgarvan House, Ballon, Co. Carlow and yet again Western Region members were among the prize winners. In the Advanced Intermediate Championship Sharon McGowan of Benbulben was 4th, Kevin Clogher of Dalysgrove was 5th in the Intermediate (Section 2) & Christine Mc Williams from Corrib RC was 6th in the Advanced Primary Championship. 15th September seen the Masters Series Show Jumping take place in Mullingar Equestrian Centre, Co. Westmeath and again plenty of ribbons were brought back to the West. Benbulbens Anna Burke got the day off to a great start by winning the Intermediate Welcome Stakes, while her club mates Joanna Kearns & Therese Anderson were 2nd & 4th. In the Open & Advanced Open Welcome Stakes Deirdre Mc Donald was 4th for Benbulben, Sylvia Baumberger was 5th for Ballinasloe & Vanessa McDonald was 6th for Benbulben. In the Intermediate Table C Speed Anna Burke was 4th for Benbulben, while in the Advanced Intermediate Table C Speed Fiona Tansey was 3rd for Benbulben & Patricia Warren was 6th for Donegal Gaeltacht and in the Open & Advanced Open Table C Speed Vanessa McDonald took the honours for Benbulben while her sister Deirdre was 5th & Sylvia Baumberger was 6th for Ballinasloe, Vanessa finished 3rd in the Open & Advanced Open Grand Prix, Deirdre was 4th while Sylvia was 6th. In the Masters Series Intermediate Leading Rider Anna Burke finished 3rd for Benbulben while club mate Edwina Ruane was 6th and in the Masters Series Open & Advanced Open Leading Rider Benbulben sisters Vanessa & Deirdre McDonald finished 2nd & 5th.

October seen the West Clubs Show Jumping & Dressage League get underway with the first 2 legs taking place in Duffys Equestrian Centre, Claregalway with great enteries in all classes.

November seen the West Clubs Show Jumping & Dressage League continue with a Show Jumping only leg in Rockmount Equestrian Centre, Claregalway and the Final in Hanley’s Equestrian Centre, Claremorris, Co. Mayo on the 17th. Benbulben RC held a Show Jumping & Dressage Show in Tubberbride on November 10th while the Donegal Clubs held the North West Autumn League in Templemore Equestrian Centre, Co. Derry, this league finished on November 24th and signalled the end of Inter-Club Competitions in the Region for 2013

The Donegal Clubs held their 2nd Annual Donegal Riding Clubs Dinner Dance & Horsey Oscar Awards on Saturday, 30 November in the Station House Hotel, Letterkenny and a brilliant night was had by all who attended.

This year also seen 3 new clubs join the region, Inishowen Riding Club & Rossan Riding Club in Co. Donegal and Cleggan Bay in Co. Galway and West Coast riding Club reformed in Co. Mayo

Don’t forget that the Annual Western Region Dinner Dance to be held in the Silver Springs Hotel, Athlone on Saturday January 25th 2014. Tickets for the Dinner Dance are €25 per person and can be booked through your Club Secretary. Rooms at the hotel cost €35 pp sharing  B&B for  the first 30 rooms and €40 pp sharing B&B  for the remaining rooms. Contact the hotel on 0906 444444 to book. This promises to be a great night if previous years are anything to go by, so book your tickets ASAP.

Competition in the New Year gets underway on Sunday January 19th with the Saoirse Saddlery Dressage League 2014, hosted by Dalysgrove RC at Creagh Equestrian Centre, Ballinalsoe. The 2nd leg will be held on February 2nd with the final on February 16th. You must attend at least one show & the final to qualify for prizes in the final.
